Fort Island Gulf Beach is Citrus County's only direct-ocean sandy beach. Located at the very tip of the historic Fort Island Trail, this peaceful beach is a favorite among locals who want to bypass commercialized, high-traffic tourist beaches. It features a sweeping curve of fine white sand, gentle Gulf waves sheltered by natural marshes, covered picnic pavilions, and active public restrooms. The beaches are infamous for those biting bugs so don't forget the bug spray!
While running the same road you will take to reach the Fort Island Beach, we often encounter interesting wildlife. This Barred Owl perched on the wire looking for breakfast, just long enough for us to snap a photo. A magnificent bird indeed!
Grannies Restaurant will mark your turn to head west towards the beach on W Fort Island Trail. The restaurant focuses on breakfast and lunch, so don't plan dinner time meals, but its a great place to feed a family for an affordable price. If you like diner style eats, it could be a place you love as much as we do!
Saltwater Sunset Gazing: Because the beach faces directly west over the open Gulf of Mexico, it is the premier spot in the county to watch sunsets. The sky turns deep shades of orange, purple, and gold over the saltwater.
Beachcombing & Shelling: Walk the shoreline during low tide to discover unique Gulf shells, horseshoe crab molts, and coastal shorebirds feeding along the tide lines.
The Oasis Beach Pack: Before heading out, open the Manatee Oaks car port gear bin, we have equipped you with some of the essentials at the house.
Dolphin Watch: Keep your eyes on the shallow marsh channels along the Fort Island Trail drive. Dolphins are frequently spotted hunting mullet right alongside the road!
