When you stay at Manatee Oaks, you are perfectly positioned to explore the absolute best of the Florida Nature Coast—including one of the most unique, breathtaking geological wonders in North America. Devil’s Den Prehistoric Spring is a bucket-list destination that transports you into an entirely different world, located just an easy, scenic 40-minute drive from your front door.
Long before it became a world-renowned diving destination, early Florida settlers came across this hidden limestone opening. On cold winter mornings, warm water vapor would rise from the subterranean spring and twist out of the cave’s surface opening like plumes of smoke. To those early onlookers, it looked like smoke rising straight from the depths of the earth—and the name "Devil’s Den" was born.
Devil's Den is a privately owned, inverted underground cave (or karst window) formed by a collapsed subterranean roof. As you step down the custom wooden staircase and descend into the cavern, the air instantly shifts to a cool, crisp temperature, and the world above disappears.
Ancient Waters: The crystal-clear, emerald-and-sapphire water remains a constant 72°F ($22^\circ\text{C}$) year-round, offering near-infinite underwater visibility.
Prehistoric Roots: This cavern is a literal time capsule. Scuba divers exploring the depths—which reach up to 54 feet ($16.5\text{ m}$)—will glide past ancient rock formations. In fact, paleontologists have recovered fossilized remains from this very cave dating back to the Pleistocene Age, including mastodons, saber-toothed cats, and early human artifacts.
The Sunbeam Effect: If you visit on a clear day, the sun lines up perfectly with the overhead surface opening, shooting dramatic, theatrical beams of light straight through the cave air and illuminating the water below. It is a dream configuration for underwater photography.
To ensure your crew has a flawless experience, keep these insider tips in mind when planning your itinerary:
⚠️ Strict Access Rules: To protect the fragile underground ecosystem, general "swimming," wading, or casual walk-in sightseeing inside the cave is strictly prohibited. You must be actively snorkeling or scuba diving to enter the cavern. But, there is a surface pond that is man made, but spring fed, for those that don't want to snorkel or for spending time after coming out of the "den".
🗓️ Reservations Are Required: Because space inside the cavern is strictly regulated to prevent crowding, you must book your snorkel or dive time slots online via their official portal prior to arrival. Slots fill up quickly—especially during the summer scalloping season!
🤿 Gear Rental: Make sure to grab the snorkel gear from Manatee Oak's before leaving, including, towels, phone case and even dry bag if needed. If that's not enough for your crew, Devil's Den provides full-service rentals on-site, including masks, snorkels, fins, wetsuits, and complete scuba rig packages.
Make the most of your excursion! We recommend heading up to Devil's Den for a morning snorkel or dive session. On your way back south to Manatee Oaks, stop for a classic southern lunch in historic Williston or Dunnellon, or pair the trip with an afternoon drift down the nearby crystal-clear waters of Rainbow Springs.
After an unforgettable day of subterranean exploration, return home to Manatee Oaks to rinse off in the custom master snail shower, fired up the grill on the patio, and spend the evening unwinding by the heated pool and spa.
